Meet The Team

Brand Manager, Gary Halestrap

Gary entered the motor industry almost 30 years ago and a proven testament that our Family ethics hold tight in today’s world is that all of this time Gary has been with the Barnard family at Stowmarket. Starting in the Parts Department, dispensing Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes Commercial parts before moving to the service department. Having gained a great deal of understanding of the trade there, Gary made the change over to the Sales department. With this rounded experience he was well placed to accept the promotion as Aftersales Manager. Barnards then went through a period of modernisation as a result of the relief road and although we have remained on the same site in Station Road since our founder Oliver Barnard started the company, the showroom has become a prominent building in Stowmarket. In 2003, Gary became Brand Manager for Barnards of Stowmarket, where one of his first tasks was to steer Barnards through Volkswagens vigorous quality management audit, for which Barnards was one of the first to experience the audit and gain the accreditation. As of February 2015, Gary has now taken on the role of Brand Manager at the Bury St Edmunds Volkswagen site and looks forward to the new challenges ahead.

Through his career Gary has embraced the ever changing ways of the motor industry, and to ensure that he can provide a service second to none, he has trained with the Institute of the Motor Industry to the level of Automotive Management Accreditation (AMA).

Gary encourages his team to support local charities and always take part in the world’s biggest coffee morning in aid of Macmillan which is a personal favorite to Gary, and for which he ran the 2008 London Marathon.

By nature, Gary is a very active person, running and competing with the Stowmarket Striders whilst also competing in the regions triathlons.

When asked about his successes with Barnards and the Marriott Motor Group, Gary commented, "It’s a privilege working for a business that has been in existence for more than 100 years and still carries the family name".

Sales Manager, James King

Starting as a trainee Customer Account Manager with the Marriott Motor Group at Northgate Volkswagen, James has become a valuable member of the MMG family. This role was a pioneering new role back in the year 2000, incorporating the idea to assist customers with their specific needs; irrespective of which department was to supply the service, be it Sales, After Sales or Parts/Accessories. Having gained a fantastic level of customer experience James moved on to become a specialised Sales Executive, followed by promotions to Senior Sales Executive and then Business Manager in 2004. In 2009 he was promoted to retailer Sales Manager at Bury St Edmunds Volkswagen.

Along with James’ support, Bury St Edmunds Volkswagen has achieved improving positions within the Volkswagen National rankings for performance and customer service during the previous five years. Top 25 finish in 2012, Top 15 in 2013 (particularly impressive as this was achieved during the construction of our superb "New Concept" 10 car showroom) and currently they are on track for a top 5 spot in 2014.

Recently Bury St Edmunds Volkswagen Sales department were awarded an Excellence Accolade by Volkswagen for their Digital Customer Experience. We have been working hard to make the customer purchase experience even better by using new technology.

Commenting on Bury St Edmunds Volkswagen James said, "it is a very warm and friendly retailer. Our teams are filled with long serving, personable product experts who enjoy their work and love delighting every customer with the experience they receive. This formula has proven very successful with both achieving the highest accolades with Volkswagen Retailer Performance, but most importantly the fantastic customer comments we receive every day. This feedback really spurs us on to new heights".

Most of James’ spare time is spent with his young family. If there is any spare time left he enjoys racket sports particularly tennis and squash and spending time with friends.

Aftersales Manager, Terry Scott

I started in the Motor industry over 25 years ago, firstly with-in a parts department then moving onto the service department as a Service advisor. After gaining promotion to the position of Workshop Controller I took the opportunity to join the Marriott Motor Group. I’ve enjoyed more than 16 years here, working as a Service Advisor, Workshop Controller and now the After-Sales Manager

Having worked my way through the various roles with in the motor industry, it has provided a good insight allowing me to offer an improved customer service. Whilst doing so I have gained many Volkswagen accreditations.

Within the business we like to support charitable events where we can. On a couple of occasions I have completed the London to Paris bike ride on behalf of the Macmillan Cancer Trust; along with my colleagues we have raised almost £5000

I have worked for Bury St Edmunds Volkswagen for many years and it has always been a friendly family run business that continually works toward delivering great customer Service

In my spare time, I’m currently enjoying the renovation of my current home, which I’ve been working on now for a couple of years. I also enjoy cycling which I like to think keeps me young.

Business Manager, Adam Gumb

Starting in the motor trade over 16 years ago, Adam joined the Marriott Motor Group at Bury St Edmunds Volkswagen in August 2013 as a Sales Executive. Having enjoyed a very successful first year combined with his previous experience his recent promotion to Transaction Manager is of no surprise. Under the leadership of Sales Manager James King he is very much looking to the challenges that lie ahead.

Whether at work or play, Adam believes that ‘you get out what you put in’. His personal satisfaction levels soared after completing the London Marathon for "VICTOR" (Visually Impaired Children Taken Action) raising over £2000. He’s also raised funds for St Nicholas Hospice by swimming in the Thames (Victoria Docks) on two separate occasions.

Business Manager, Joe Parmenter

Joe started in the motor trade 7 years ago with Hyundai before making the move to the Marriott Motor Group and Bury St Edmunds Volkswagen five and a half years ago. It was always his ambition to work for the Volkswagen Brand and now boasts of his pride to be with us.

Joe’s recent promotion to transaction manager with Bury St Edmunds Volkswagen is a validation of his enthusiastic manner to succeed. Having enjoyed these early years with the family run business he is delighted to progress his career with the Marriott Motor Group.

Joe was part of the 2012 London to Paris bike ride for Macmillan cancer Support, an event that he completed with Terry Scott and Shaun Barlow. This was an excellent trip that raised in excess of £200,000; Joe does a lot of cycling for charity for many local organisations. In his spare time you can guess that cycling takes most of it, along with playing the guitar (but not at the same time!)
